2010 Project Earth Environmental Education Grant Recipients
Congratulations to these schools and their teachers, who have been awarded grants for meaningful, hands-on learning experiences about the environment.
- Dawson County High School, $1,500.00.
This money served as seed money to get the community behind refurbishing a city fountain and the garden area surrounding it. This fountain, which was first developed as the city of Glendive was developing, sits in a high profile area in the center of town.
- DeSmet School District, $1,500.00.
This funding providing transportation for 28 Missoula seventh and eighth graders to attend the Glacier Institute program in Kalispell. This 3 day 2 night program gave the student in-depth science and math experiences while experiencing the ecosystem of the Crown of the Continent.
- Fairfield School District, $1,500.00.
This funding allowed the school to purchase 10 fuel cell car kits. This enabled 58 students in grades 4-8 to conduct 30 different experiments and learn about alternative energy.
- Helena High School Science Department, $1,363.00.
Students used this funding to travel to Prickly Pear Creek to conduct water quality tests and collect data on riparian vegetation, stream flow, macroinvertebrate populations and stream geomorphology. They were accompanied by a water quality expert from the Montana Dept. of Environmental Quality.
- Hyalite Elementary School, $1,500.00.
This grant was used to transform an existing irrigated and mowed outdoor amphitheatre area into a Lewis & Clark-themed learning site. This outdoor classroom features native trees, shrubs, flowers and grasses.
- Bozeman School District #7, $1,500.00.
Equipment was purchased with this grant so that students could analyze water quality. They studied their local Bozeman Creek and then compared and contrasted their learning with a study of Holter Lake Reservoir.
- Wisdom School, $1,500.00.
Many organizations partnered to develop a Watershed Education Program in the Big Hole River watershed. By teaching students about their watershed and the science that surrounds it, we are creating future stewards of the watershed. This funding was to help this rural school with transportation costs.
