Work continues on Hebgen Dam

Contractors are making safe, steady progress on constructing a cofferdam, which will provide access to Hebgen Dam’s intake structure.

Cofferdam walls are being installed, creating a watertight construction that will provide access to normally submerged areas of the intake structure and allow for permanent repairs to be made.

The damage in the structure, discovered in late August 2008, is related to loss of stoplogs in one of the intake bays, but it has not been determined what caused the failure. Stoplogs, timbers similar to railroad ties, are stacked in the dam’s bays and used to regulate water flow from the intake structure.

The work at Hebgen dam has no effect on lake levels or river flows, but for safety reasons the area around the dam is closed to the public.

The site will be opened this winter for ice fishing access as soon as the ice is thick enough.
