For public safety reasons, PPL Montana, in consultation with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, will close the Black Eagle Memorial Island Recreation Area in Great Falls, associated parking area and a portion of the River’s Edge Trail starting on April 23, 2012. The closure is anticipated to continue through Nov. 30, 2012. The recreation area is off North River Road near the Black Eagle Community Center.
The temporary closure will protect the public from an area of power line construction activities and substation work associated with the Black Eagle power house. River’s Edge Trail users can park at the designated parking lot along North River Road, adjacent to Northwestern Energy and Black Eagle Community Park and walk west on the trail.
The following Great Falls public recreation areas will remain open and are not affected by this closure:
- Rainbow Boat Launch
- North Shore Trail system east of Ryan Trailhead
- Ryan Island and clubhouse (opens Mother’s Day)
- Sulphur Spring Trail and Trailhead
- Lower Morony river access
- All South Shore trails
- Lewis and Clark, Rainbow, and Crooked Falls overlooks
