PPL Montana Announces Winners of Water Safety School Poster Contest; Program to Expand Next Year

A fish and six new shareowners of PPL Corporation are helping spread the news throughout Montana about water safety.

Joining Tommy Trout — an energetic, cartoonlike safety mascot — these talented Great Falls students are winners in PPL Montana’s water safety poster contest.

Because of the enthusiastic response to the contest, PPL Montana will be conducting the contest again in the 2005-2006 school year and inviting more Montana schools and students to
                          join in the fun.

“PPL Montana strives to provide energy responsibly, and to do so, we focus our resources not only on business, but also on education and the environment,” said Lisa Perry, PPL Montana’s manager of Community Affairs. “This contest was designed as a fun, hands-on activity for teachers and students to learn about water safety and to spread this important message.”

PPL Montana invited students in grades three through six in 21 schools in the Great Falls area to choose an outdoor activity — swimming, fishing, canoeing, etc. — and create a poster. The poster was to express an important message about safety around Montana’s many lakes, rivers and streams.

Invitations to participate generated 123 entries from 12 classrooms in eight different schools. A panel of teachers and PPL Montana employees chose the following winners:

  • Grade 3: Grand Prize – Ali R. Orr, Riverview Elementary School.
  • Grade 3: Runner-Up – Carie Pointer, Lincoln Elementary School.
  • Grade 4: Grand Prize – Jacquelin Santin, Our Lady of Lourdes.
  • Grade 4: Runner-Up – Shelby Rae Meyers, Our Lady of Lourdes.
  • Grade 5: Grand Prize – Stephanie Lynn Spencer, Loy Elementary School.
  • Grade 6: Grand Prize – Marissa Jacobs, East Middle School.

The six prizewinning posters are featured on a special 2005 PPL Montana Water Safety Poster, copies of which are being distributed to schools, community leaders and PPL Montana facilities throughout the state.

Each grand prizewinner will receive a certificate and two shares of PPL Corporation stock; the runners-up will each receive a certificate and one share of stock. PPL Montana is also giving $50 for instructional materials or supplies to each teacher of grand prizewinners.

For the 2005-2006 school year, PPL Montana will be expanding the program to schools in the Billings, Butte, Colstrip, Helena, Missoula, Polson and Thompson Falls areas. School officials will be receiving information about the contest in the fall. Winning posters will be featured in a 2006 calendar.
