Wholesale Energy Marketing

Wholesale customers of PPL EnergyPlus purchase our electricity for resale.

We are an asset-backed marketer and trader of wholesale electricity, capacity, options, risk management products, emission allowances, tolling and structured or customized products. Our firm sales in the west are backed by more than 1,200 megawatts of PPL's proven and reliable generating assets in Montana.

PPL Montana is one of the suppliers that NorthWestern Energy has contracted with to provide electricity. Northwestern is the “default supplier” for Montana retail electricity customers. It buys electricity on behalf of its 300,000 customers.

Today, PPL supplies roughly 50 percent of NorthWestern’s electricity through two long-term contracts that span the years 2002 through mid-2007. It is some of the lowest-cost electricity in NorthWestern’s portfolio. And, even though the market price for electricity has significantly increased since 2002, our contract price with NorthWestern has remained unchanged.

Our short-term sales to NorthWestern are competitively priced and based on market conditions at the time of sale.
